About Us

We believe that each individual child is unique and has the right to an education suitable to their needs, level of development and cultural background.

It is our responsibility as teachers to provide and maintain a safe, secure and stimulating environment in which each child has the opportunity to develop physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. Teachers/ caregivers in the Centre will be significant model for the children to develop good manners, respect for others, and pride in achievement, initiative, self-confidence and positive attitude toward learning experience.

The Centre will provide fun, creative and friendly environment. Parents/ Whanau are most welcome to share their culture, language and home experience that may benefit the children/ tamariki in a holistic development.

English as a Second Language

We welcome children with English as their second language. We celebrate cultures and we encourage parents to integrate their unique cultures within our Centre.

Positive behaviour guidance policy

Our policy on child behaviour practice has been formulated to provide clear guidelines and also to enable parents/guardians to feel comfortable with the knowledge of how their children will be cared for throughout the day.

Teachers are required to model pro-social skills at all times. Respect, affection, acceptance and self-confidence are our daily goals for empowering each child. Our philosophy is that each child has unique individual potential which requires nurturing through effective and gentle guidance.

Birthdays

Children are most welcome to celebrate their birthdays with us. Parents are most welcome to join us or leave cameras for us to record the celebrations.

Settling in children

At Sunny Side, time and stress are reduced in the settling process by having you visit as often as possible before your child is expected to attend. At these visits please get to know your child's teachers and, if possible, stay during the first stages of transition until your child is settled into an activity or happy with a teacher or peer. We do not encourage children to bring their toys to the centre, as the toys may get broken or lost. The only exception is if they need a special toy to sleep with. Parents are encouraged to say goodbye once and then leave, as frequent coming and going is unsettling for children.

Sick child

Maintaining a healthy environment is very important at our centre. Your child should be kept home if you suspect illness, especially of an infectious nature.

Diarrhoea and vomiting are contagious and it's our policy that if a child is suffering from either of these, regardless of the cause, they must be kept away from the centre for 48 hours from the last attack.

Please notify our teachers if your child is unwell and unable to attend. In the event that any child becomes ill while at Sunny Side, we will require a parent or guardian to collect them immediately.

Please fill in the medication folder if your child requires any medication to be administered by the staff. The staff are not permitted to administer medication without your signature. We often find parents are just as stressed by the s eparation process as children. Please talk to our staff as it will help.

These procedures are reviewed annually.
